So you have waited until the last minute to file. Here are some tips to make sure you meet the deadline:
- If you owe money and are using the mail, your envelope must be postmarked on April 30 to be considered filed on time.
- You can make tax payments at most financial institutions but you will need to have the proper remittance slips. Consider paying online using the CRA’s My Payment service.
- If you are using NETFILE, it will be busier as the day goes on. If you owe, do not leave submitting until the last minute. Make sure you get a confirmation number. If you have difficulty transmitting, check the CRA website for information. In prior years, they have announced extensions to the deadline due to heavy volume.
- Keep your receipts no matter how you file. You need proof if the Canada Revenue Agency asks you to support a claim.
And if you intend on missing the deadline tonight, NETFILE will remain open for 2012 tax returns until November 30, 2013. If you intend to procrastinate longer than that, you will need to mail a copy of your return to the CRA.
